The Sagebrush Equine Training Center is an Idaho 501 (c) (3) non-profit corporation that offers equine-assisted activities and therapies to people with disabilities at no charge. The programs are offered Monday through Thursday 9:00 – 5:00, year round. The programs are divided into four sessions (winter, spring, summer, fall).
Eligibility Requirements
Any person diagnosed with an emotional, physical, cognitive, behavioral or social challenge from age 2 years or older is eligible to apply for enrollment in one of the Sagebrush programs. There are additional requirements that students must first meet before we can enroll them in our program:
-
Students eligible to ride in Sagebrush programs must be referred by a doctor, counselor, therapist, social worker or special education teacher. All referrals must be sent to the Program Director by mail, email or fax.
-
A parent or legal guardian must contact the Program Director at the Sagebrush office to discuss eligibility and fill out all applicable enrollment forms. No student may begin sessions with Sagebrush until all forms are received. The enrollment forms can be found here or may be obtained through the mail following an initial conversation with the Program Director. Once all enrollment forms are received, the Program Director will contact the parent/guardian to schedule a weekly lesson to begin at the start of the next session. If no lesson spots are available, the student will be placed on a waiting list for the next available opening.
-
The student and his/her parent(s) or caregiver must attend a preliminary evaluation with Sagebrush’s Program Director. This process is in place to help Sagebrush set goals and establish the best treatment plan possible for each individual student. It is also at this time that precautions and contraindications to riding for particular disabilities are reviewed and discussed on an individual basis.
-
Sagebrush currently accepts students starting at age 2. Students younger than 2 years may be accepted depending upon the findings of the initial evaluation with the Program Director, and at Sagebrush’s discretion.
-
Sagebrush reserves the right to deny or remove a student from a therapy session if their actions jeopardize the safety of the horses, staff, volunteers or him/herself.
