Blaine County School ProgramDuring the school year, Sagebrush provides an equine-assisted learning classroom for students in a special education program or on an individualized education program (IEP). Over 60 students from eight classrooms participate in therapeutic riding weekly, working towards their IEP goals. Equine Facilitated TherapyStudents participate in weekly riding sessions focused on utilizing the multi-directional movement of the horse to improve strength, balance, and coordination. In addition, students experience improvements in cognitive processing, confidence and social interaction. Interactive VaultingGymnastics on the back of a moving horse! Working in a group, students learn moves that challenge balance and strength, foster teamwork, and improve confidence. Community Service ProgramSuspended or expelled Blaine County School students are referred to Sagebrush to perform community service. These students learn life skills and improve accountability in a safe, positive environment by assisting with therapeutic riding lessons and performing maintenance chores. “Ranch Hands” summer work/study programFor at-risk teenagers. Teens learn responsibility and accountability by working with adult mentors once a week assisting equine-facilitated therapy sessions and doing maintenance projects around the ranch. They sign a contract at the beginning of the summer and receive a bonus at the end once the contract is fulfilled. Youth Horsemanship CourseFor children ages 9-13. Focused on improving social skills, building confidence and cognitive processing, Sagebrush provides a two-hour weekly course during the summer. This course includes a mounted riding lesson and complete horsemanship instruction on the ground. Transportation is provided if necessary. Trail RidingWith the use of Sagebrush designed saddles, students who have progressed from equine-facilitated therapy to independent riding are taken on trail rides. Our saddles allow people faced with serious physical conditions to experience the beauty of the Wood River Valley astride a horse. Special Interest GroupsSagebrush provides horseback riding for children at Camp Rainbow Gold, the Idaho School for the Deaf and Blind and for Sun Valley Adaptive Sports Wounded Warriors and Dreams Come True Programs. Equipment DesignSagebrush is the forerunner in adaptive riding equipment design. This research is available to other therapeutic riding centers and individuals worldwide. Our design for western saddles adapted to help challenged individuals ride with greater independence is published in the textbook, Therapeutic Riding, Strategies for Instruction and Rehabilitation edited by Barbara Engel. Instructor InternshipPeople interested in learning about therapeutic riding instruction and pursuing their instructor certification through PATH Intl. have the opportunity to intern with Sagebrush.
