Cheryl Bennett, Executive Director

 

Cheryl has been involved with the Sagebrush program since its inception in 1991.  She has served on the board of directors, and she has consistently volunteers in lessons as a horse handler.  She is a native of southern Idaho and became the executive director in April 2011.  She is a life-long horse owner, with experience in western riding and Dressage.

Lindsey Jameson - SETCH
Lindsey Jameson, Program Director, Instructor

Lindsey joined the Sagebrush team in 2005, became a PATH Intl.Registered Instructor in February 2006, and a an Advanced Instructor in September 2010. She is currently a PATH Intl. Faculty/Evaluator for the Registered Level and an Associate Site Visitor.  Her prior work experience includes teaching western horseback riding, mentoring "at risk" youth, and leading outdoor education trips. She graduated from Colby College with the independent major "Nature and Nurture in the Human Condition", with a focus on Biology and Psychology. She grew up riding horses in the southern Sierra Nevada mountains, and competing in jumping and Dressage.

Trudy Peterson - SETCH
Trudy Peterson Instructor

Trudy came to the Sagebrush the summer of 2008. She grew up in Carey, Idaho riding horses and working cattle. She enjoys ranch sorting and team roping. She developed her own horse training techniques using techniques of Clinton Anderson and Chris Cox. She specializes in ground training and teaching western riding lessons. She is integral in maintaining the soundness, health and happiness of our horse herd.  She achieved her PATH Intl.Registered Instructor certification in April 2011.

Kate Ristow
Kate Ristow, Instructor

Kate grew up on San Juan Island and has experience in various equestrian disciplines including eventing, jumping, vaulting, Dressage and trail riding. She earned her bachelor's degree from Emerson College in Writing, Literature and Publishing and a master's degree in Fiction Writing from the University of Montana. She recently cared for and trained 180 Arabians on a working guest ranch in Wyoming. Kate joined the Sagebrush team in January 2010 and earned her PATH Intl. Registered Instructor Certification in March 2010.

Lisa Scales
Lisa Scales, Instructor

Lisa Scales grew up in the Wood River Valley participating in 4H and Pony Club. She competed in hunter/jumpers and ski raced. Lisa earned her degree from Boise State University in Health Sciences and Child Psychology. Her prior work experience includes aiding in occupational, speech and physical therapy for children with disabilities. She joined the Sagebrush team in 2000, became a PATH Intl. Registered Instructor in 2002 and an Advanced Instructor in September 2010. She currently teaches part time at Sagebrush.

Brienne Mabry, Instructor, Equine Manager

Brienne grew up in Anchorage, Alaska. Brienne comes from a riding family and has been riding since she was able to sit in the saddle. Brienne was very active in 4-H growing up and has been a 4-H leader and organized many summer camps. Brienne grew up volunteering with the Rainbow Connection Therapeutic Riding Program in Anchorage and has held the positions of volunteer coordinator, lead instructor, and equine manager. In 2003 Brienne was the Northwest Coach at the Special Olympics World Games in Ireland where all her riders medaled with gold and silver. Brienne has worked in several vet clinics and is certified as an equine and human massage therapist. Brienne has been a PATH Intl. Registered Instructor since 1998, and joined the Sagebrush team in May 2011.

Faith McKee, Instructor

Faith grew up in Anchorage, Alaska riding, taking clinics, showing, and participating in 4-H camps. Faith spent several years in California riding and showing. She has been a volunteer with the Rainbow Connection Therapeutic Riding Program and with the Special Olympics riders in Anchorage. Faith has her Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Alaska Pacific University and a Masters of Art in Teaching with Special Education Endorsement from Pacific University. Faith has worked with individuals with many different abilities as a direct service provider, teacher’s aid, as a teacher in the Adult Community Transition Program, and as a Care Coordinator. Faith is also certified as a Person Centered Planning Facilitator. Faith joined the Sagebrush team in November 2011.

Larry Smith SETCH
Larry Smith, Facility Manager

Larry grew up in Rupert, Idaho and spent time in the Wood River Valley skiing and fishing. He graduated from Minico High School in 1973 and started a small irrigation company. He spent five years in Saudi Arabia designing wheat and hay farms. In 1980 he moved to California, and owned and operated a landscape business for 12 years. Other work experience includes managing a car dealership and working for an irrigation supply company. Larry’s equestrian experience includes trail riding, cutting and team penning. He came to Sagebrush September 2008.

Robert Olson SETCH
Robert Olson, Assistant Instructor

Robert grew up in Bellevue, Idaho. He was a student at Sagebrush since preschool, and later he became a member of the Special Olympic team. His horse and riding skills developed tremendously, and in 2007 he started working at Sagebrush part time assisting the instructors with lessons and horse maintenance. He currently works two days a week assisting with all parts of the daily lesson schedule.

Hugh Blue, Instructor

Hugh has been volunteering at Sagebrush since 1999. He has been a horse handler, a side walker, a Special Olympics coach, and has achieved the "gold volunteer" status, the most advanced level of volunteers. In 2007 he was awarded the PATH Intl. Region 9 Volunteer of the Year. In November 2008 he achieved his PATH Intl. Registered Instructor Certification, and he now teaches therapeutic riding lessons at Sagebrush two days a week.

Cally Galpin, Instructor

Cally has been volunteering at Sagebrush since 2007. As she spent many hours volunteering as a horse handler, side walker, and horse exerciser, she learned quickly and became a "gold volunteer". In November 2008, Cally achieved her PATH Intl. Registered Instructor Certification. She now teaches therapeutic riding lessons one day a week at Sagebrush.

Judy Grigsby
Judy Grigsby, Instructor

Judy has been volunteering at Sagebrush since 1998. She has been a horse handler, side walker, horse exerciser, and Special Olympics coach. She even trailers her horse, Richie, to work in the developmental preschool weekly session. She has been a "gold volunteer" since 2007, and in 2008 she was recognized as the PATH Intl. Region 9 volunteer of the year. In November 2008 she became a PATH Intl. Registered Instructor, and she now teaches therapeutic riding lessons at Sagebrush one day a week.

Bill Postlewait
Bill Postlewait, Maintenance Assistant

Bill comes to Sagebrush everyday and volunteers his time. He feeds horses their supplements, grooms horses, assists the instructors, and keeps the facility looking spotless!  He was recently awarded the PATH Intl. Region 9 Volunteer of the Year for 2011.

The Sagebrush Equine Training Center for the Handicapped is a 501 (c)(3) Idaho non-profit corporation founded in 1991 to provide equine-facilitated therapy for challenged adults and children. Our goal is to provide physical, cognitive and emotional benefits that will encourage independence, help develop life skills and improve quality of life.

Recent News

Big News!! SETCH has a new home! SETCH recently purchased the Swiftsure Ranch located two miles south of Bellevue. The property includes 191 acres with Big Wood River frontage, an indoor arena, an outdoor arena, two round pens, two barns, and pasture for the horses. Renovation will start immediately, and we will hopefully be at our new home summer 2012.
